Bit of an Update

Got some stick from a friend the other evening about how poor I've been about updating my blog -- all too deserved, I'm afraid: it's not been one of my priorities for several months. But today, looking out the window at an Irish fog, is a good day to list a few things that have been happening, since it means I can postpone updating my Web site for another while at least.

First, Faerie Wars. The adventure that started in Henry's bedroom finished with Faerie Lord which drew kindly responses in the main from professional critics and loyal readers. But it also provoked several fans of the series to ask about the possibility of further faerie books. Since the characters wouldn't leave me alone anyway, I did prepare a synopsis for just one more. It was called The Faeman Child, set 16 years after the action of Faerie Lord, and told the story of the teenage daughter of Henry and Blue -- the faeman child of the title. I have to stress that it's not written yet and does not have a publisher, so it may disappear into limbo, but I can say that there is now the first distinct sign of publisher interest. If it comes to anything, I'll let you know.

Next, a Faerie Wars movie. An option contract has been signed by one of the major computer animation studios and a screenwriting team is at work on a screenplay. Whether this will turn into an actual movie remains to be seen, but it's a step in the right direction. One thing's certain: nothing will happen fast. The contract gives the studio rights for 18 months, renewable for a further 18, so it could be three years before we know for certain what, if anything, is going to happen.

Finally The Shadow Project. This is a teen occult fantasy spy thriller about out of body experience that I wrote as a major change of pace after Faerie Lord was finished. Both my current publishers hated it, but HarperCollins in the U.S. thought it was the business and has contracted for a series. It's due for publication in 2010.

Hello Sir! I greatly enjoyed your GrailQuest adventure books as a kid, and chanced upon your blog after a spot of Googling. I must revisit those books one day soon. Thanks for all the fun!

Glad you liked them Jason. Actually, I've just embarked on a project to get the GrailQuest back in print (in English, that is: they're still selling worldwide in a variety of foreign language editions) hopefully next year.

Excellent, sir. That would make a lot of sense, in a world where The Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter are massive, and Merlin has appeared on BBC1. I still own the old books myself... apart from the last one, I believe. Elusive.

I love your books. They are just the kind of intruiging thing I look for. I'm twelve. I have twelve cats. Faerie wars are awesome. Try to get more out Please? I'm thirsty for good writing and you, I think could satisfy my thirst. I read a book a day, I've been doing so for six years. Out of all the books I've read yours are some of the most interesting. Question: Are your cats pure or are they moggies? You interest me. I don't think I've seen this sort of thing before.{no wonder, I'm only 12} Goodbye then,

Herbie Brennan said...

Than you for the kind words Allie. Twelve cats is good. I'm down to seven myself at the moment, which is way short of my all-time record of 17 in a one-bedroomed flat. They're all mogs: not a thoroughbred among them.
There might be one more Faerie Wars: apparently my publisher has expressed some interest to my agent, but nothing definite yet. I'll announce on the blog if it comes to anything.

Yay! that sounds good. I haven't figured out anything else to say yet, so, bye

Which of your books would you recomend me to read next? I've only read a few. I like your writing style and would like to see some more of it. Just out of curiosity, have you ever heard of Tamora Pierce? I'm sure a writer such as you reads plenty too, otherwise where would you learn and get examples from? I ask alot of questions, sorry.

Herbie Brennan said...

Not sure what to recommend: the trouble is I haven't written anything else like the Faerie Wars series. They're a bit young, but you might be mad enough to enjoy Fairy Nuff and Nuff Said if you can find copies in your library; and if you like weird stuff, you could always try my Herbie Brennan's Forbidden Truths non-fiction series.

I have heard of Tamora Pierce. She's very famous.

I just wanted to say that the Faerie wars series were the greatest books ive read and ill be watching eagerly for Faeman child, i hope it doesnt disappear into limbo.

A movie would also be amazing.

Herbie Brennan said...

Still no more news on the movie, but I've accepted an offer for Faeman Child, so that one is looking definite. More details after contracts are exchanged...

a *gasp* movie? O.o hope they do it well, like Holes. :)

I feel a bit like that, Lalolia. The project is still live and the studio is currently waiting for the first draft of their screenplay. Fun or what?

A badly updated blog is (hopefully) indicative of a writer busy doing actual writing.

I have read and enjoyed Magick for Beginners and later, Monster Horrorshow. Faeries Wars is on my shelf, waiting...

I'm afraid a badly-updated blog in my case is only indicative of laziness and a distracted mind. But I *am* working on a new teen novel at the moment, which is going well after some false starts.

Enjoy Faerie Wars, Glumm!

Hello Herbie! I'm a loooong time reader of the Faerie Wars series (I have to re-read it every couple of months- though, admittedly, it's not actually reading, since half the time I listen to the book-on-tape versions) and have been a fan ever since I found the series. I sent you a e-mail once, a couple of years ago, while waiting for Ruler of the Realm, and was surprised to get a response! You've got to be one of my absolute favorite writers, though I've only read the Faerie Wars series by you.

Anyway, I'm very hopeful that The Faeman Child will go through to publication! I always wondered what happened to Henry after the end of Faerie Lord. The others, too, but Henry was my favorite of them all. Oh, and for the bad guys, I'm tied between Chalkill and Brimstone. It's hard to decide, even between the bad guys!

I hope the movie goes through too, just as long as they don't completely botch it up. But no matter if they manage to keep it canon, there is no way it will be able to match up with the books.

Hi Libby,

Nice to hear from you again. The Faeman Child is under contract now, so hopefully the only problem left will be writing it. (I'm in the middle of the second book of a different series at the moment.) Henry and Blue do appear, but it's mainly about their daughter.

I know what you mean about the movie, but try not to lose too much sleep over it. It'll either get made or it won't and it'll either be great or it won't... Lap of the Gods.

Hello, my name is Jorge and you are one of my favorite authors in English. I first picked up your Faery Wars chronicles book when I moved to the USA and actually started to learn English, since then the series has been one of my favorites I look forward to finding more books by you

have a long healthy life :D

Hi Jorge,

Glad you enjoyed the Faerie Wars. You can look out for just one more (The Faeman Girl) next autumn sometime. I'll blog the exact date when I have it.

Hello Mr Brennan
I bought your FL books for my son and we both ended up as big fans.
The stories could be turned into fantastical films - what happened to the movie right options you mentioned in Dec 2008?
Is there any possibility we might see FL on the big screen anytime soon?
Best regards, James

Herbie Brennan said...

Hi James,

What happened was the recession, unfortunately. The studio with the option decided to cut back on its movie-making plans and allowed the option to lapse. So if there’s an imaginative movie mogul out there looking for a blockbuster property...
