Faerie Lord

That's that then. I've finished the edit of 'Faerie Lord' and emailed it to Bloomsbury. The good news is that they've stopped hassling me about the title and decided 'Faerie Lord' is as good as they're going to get. They've also designed a fantastic cover (one of the best I've seen in years) and the book is now on schedule for publication in the autumn of 2007.

For those of you who've been wondering -- quite a few, to judge from the emails I've received -- this completes the story of Henry Atherton and leaves me undecided about what to do with the rest of my life. When I've figured it out, I'll let you know.

Ah... I can't wait to see how the cover looks! Although, I am sad that this is the end of Henry's story, hope it's a good one!

I just finished reading 'The Ruler of the Realm'. I couldn't stop laughing about the demon implant plot. Half the Senate...the President...the Prime Minister... Bloody hilarious, Herbie! It explains so much! I laughed until my sides hurt.

Can't wait for the next one!

I'll tell you when I find out myself. At the moment it seems to be about a young thief called Danny Lipman with the ability to manifest things from another reality.

As things stand, what's happening is that Faerie Lord will be published first in America, in hardback, this coming autumn. (I think October, but I'm not sure.) A German language edition will probably be coming out around the same time.

UK publishers will generally buy what are loosely called UK and Commonwealth rights which include Ireland, funnily enough. This means that any UK publication is released simultaneously in places like Ireland and Australia.

Bloomsbury UK are currently planning to relaunch the whole Faerie Wars series in the UK in February 2008: new covers and a bit of razamataz. So rather than publishing Faerie Lord next autumn to coincide with the US publication, they're holding off until Feb 2008 when it will come out as a paperback original as part of the relaunched series.

As far as I know, this means it should also be available in Ireland and Australia from Feb 2008 as well.

Hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Awsome, I was scared that there might not be a fourth book. The story is brilliant, by the way, I love Henry. Sad that his story is ending, but I'm sure he'll go out with a bang.

Can't wait!

I came across Faerie Wars a couple years ago at Half Price Bookstore (my favorite bookstore since i was 10)the blue butterfly on the cover caught my eye and like always before i buy a book i read the first couple sentences and dubbed it worthy enough for my already overflowing personal library. As a die hard book worm ill admit it took me months to finish the first book (i discoverd Kurt Vonnegut that same day) but while reading the last few chapters i went to Barnes and Noble online (my top choice in book stores) and bought numbers 2 and 3 im currently finishing up book 3 and trying to find the 4th and final book online in paperback (my OCD refuses to allow me to have hard cover mixed with paperbacks in a single series) from what iv read Faerie Lord came out in hard cover dec.2007 it being may of 2008 i dont see why the paperback version isnt available. Would you know the relise date? is it already out but not in the U.S? im not sure if the actual Herbie Brennan even reads these posts but i would like to say im absolutly in love with this series this is the exact kind of adventure i was looking for!

Hi Maggz89,

I don't know the release date for the US Faerie Lord paperback (nobody tells me anything.) The usual policy is to run with the hardback for about a year to try to maximise sales, then issue a paperback. There *is* a paperback on sale in the UK as part of a relaunch of the whole series and I notice this is available on Amazon.com in the US. Search for Faerie Lord, which will get you to the hardback, then click on 'paperback' under 'other editions.' Glad you're enjoying the series. You'll love Faerie Lord -- it's the best of the four.

Ok so Ruler of the Realm is finished off as of 3minutes ago and i say how dare you end it in such suspence!! Tahnk you for the amazon.com tip but id have to wait till the papeback book 4 shows up in one of the bookstores i have girft cards to, there are no book stores close to my town besides cheap novels in the check out lines in grocery stores. Are you workking on anyother sci-fi series or novels? Are any characters frm FWC based on you? Your kid(s)? How did the ideas for this harry potter meets science fair adventure? Why is the sky blue? I cant belive im talking to (The actual) Herbie Brennan!!

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long, Maggz89. (And hopefully it'll be worth it.) At the moment I've finished a paranormal/horror/thriller novel about out of body experience and terrorism, but the publishers have shown no interest in it so far. I think there's a bit of Fogarty in me (the paranoid bit) and a lot of Henry. The sci-fi fantasy mix comes from reading sci-fi exclusively as a kid, including early Kurt Vonnegut: I always thought the two should come together. I gather the sky's blue because of light refraction in the atmosphere. (Heh-heh.)

Take care,

Herbie

Haha it better be worth it, i just started Vonnegut's Hocus Pocus this morning but i absoulutly adored Slaughter House 5 anything inspired by Vonnegut should be serious, hilarious and a bit insane all of which are in FWC yay! As far as old farts go Fogarty is by far my favorite, Henry seems a bit pansyish (no offence)but his random spurts of bravery makes him an awsome hero. But Blue is my altime favorite shes so young and has so much responsibility even before she became queen spying and making sure her brother isnt killed on a daily basis. im the big sister of about 20 kids from different families iv lived with, cooking cleaning changing diapers breaking up sibling rivery battles has to be somewere up there with ruling a realm and avoiding civil war! That new one sounds amazing i cant wait till it gets published you will post it and let everyone know right?? In the meantime ill be on the look out for book 4!!

Believe me, I'll make a noise if the new one is picked up.

As will i only somewere along the lines of YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!! i do have another question, were does Henry's dad's girlfriend hide the milk?! i know writers have their little secrets they dont mention in the actual book i know you know were she hid the milk!

Herbie Brennan said...

Oh come on Maggz -- if you've looked after 20 kids, you must know how useless boys are when it comes to finding anything. The milk was in the fridge all the time.

maggz89 said...

I knew it! or at least figured she used powdered milk (yuck!) Would you ever concider FWC to be made into a movie? If you had the choice would it be live action or animated? Would it be an all brit cast like the harry potter movies? i would love to see Nymph kick ass on the big screen!

Herbie Brennan said...

Just signed a movie option contract (which doesn't guarantee a movie, but certainly makes it more likely.) As far as I know, the plan is a blend of live action with computer animation: sort of thing they did in Lord of the Rings. My preference would be a British cast, but I don't feel strongly about this, which is just as well because I'll have no say in it.

A movie would so rock! my only beef with book movies they alway find away to ruin the book leaving out important scenes or getting things about the characters wrong all sorts of stuff. my favorite book in the forever of the world The Thief Lord was made into a cheapo never in theatres movie and they just got so much wrong and left out the best parts and somehow made the love story characters brother and sister! i have just a little problem with the harry potter movies but i understand they cant cram 700pages into 2hours. and i beg of you please dont do what they did with Series of Unfortunate Events and cram everything into 1 movie!! that was just horrible (notice they have yet to continue on with the movie series)this summer another forever favorite Inkheart is coming to theatres Brendan Fraser will be playing the lead male role im still not sure if i think hel be an ok Moe but the guy they got for my favorite character a menstel man dosnt look ANYTHING like him!! but ill wait to actualy see the flick before i roast him. The girl who plays Miette in The City of Lost Children would be a cute blue but im not sure if she speaks english (its a french film)keep your fans posted if it becomes a defiant maybe!

Herbie Brennan said...

Not that I know anything about movie-making, but I thought the first Harry Potter actually suffered from trying to make it too true to the book: you ended up with a whole series of characters and cameos that didn't go anywhere. I think the trick might be to find the essence of the book (whatever book) then find a company who have the creativity to express it in movie terms. It'll be interesting to see what happens with a Faerie Wars movie if it goes the distance.

I really hope there is a movie. i just finished the 4th book and OMG! what more can i say?! hopefully there is a movie or my life will not be complete!
