Ebook Gamebook: EgyptQuest Now on Kindle

Back in the 1980s, I passed a pleasant year or two writing solo adventure gamebooks. (Something of a fad at the time.) I’m pleased to say readers looked kindly on them. So much so, in fact, that they literally sold in their millions right across the globe and are still in print in certain countries — notably France and Japan — to this day.

Now for the first time, there’s a gamebook of mine available in ebook format. It’s called EgyptQuest: Lost Treasure of the Pyramids and it’s sort of educational as well as funny and thrilling and bonkers. You get to learn the basics of hieroglyphic writing, for example, provided you throw your dice right. You still do have to throw dice, same as in the old days, but the ebook format was just made for gamebooks since the computer looks after things when you track from section to section.

If you’re too young to remember gamebooks, you don’t read them like a novel, but create your own adventure story by tracking through the various sections the way you want to. It’s a ton of fun and a bit compulsive after a time. I have my own copy of EgyptQuest on my Kindle now and it’s brilliantly easy to play.

My epublishers, Andrews U.K. Ltd., have so far uploaded to Kindle, Omnilit and Apple’s iBookstore. If you’re interested in buying a copy for iPhone, iPad or iPod (and my bank manager really hopes you will be) you can use this link in the U.K...

And this one in the U.S...

For the Kindle edition, use this...

For Omnilit, it’s...

There will be more gamebooks to follow. (At least if I have anything to do with it.) Enjoy.

Awesome news, Herbie! It's been announced on the bookseller, too! xx

Actually I think that was another (more serious) book I wrote about Egypt, which will be brought out by Ed Victor’s new Bedford Square Books in the autumn. But thanks for noticing, Davey! Hope Undead Ed goes brilliantly for you.

Hello again,

How intersting, I never read that one, only the Grailquest, Demonspawn and Horror Classic gamebooks.

I get so nostalgic about those books, also the Skyfall books by David Tant, I guess I discovered them at a formative point in my childhood.

Their themes defined so many of my subsequent interests.

Darragh.

Nice blog, info, posts! Will be glad to have some of your works! Will be glad to post a suggestion of mine too, hope you'll like it? Do you use sites like zazzle.com, cafepress. com, fiverr? They could be a good way to promote your works and to help "remove" stupidity in the streets like headlines on t-shirts, fridge-magnets, cups, etc: My Boyfriend kisses Better Than Yours, FBI - female body inspector, etc. Not everything we see and think of should be about sex, right? It would be much better if there were more nice pictures (even of mythical creatures), good thoughts, poems (from any genre are welcome I guess), etc? I'm allanbard there, I use some of my illustrations, thoughts, poems from my books (like: One can fight money only with money, Even in the hottest fire there's a bit of water, All the problems in the world lead to one - narrow-minded people, Money are amongst the last things that make people rich, or
Let's watch the moon, let's meet the sun!
Let's hear soon the way the Deed was done!
Let's listen to the music the shiny crystals played,
let's welcome crowds of creatures good and great...
etc). Hope such things sound and look much better than the usual stuff we see every day? Never shave your beard, BTW! You must be very proud wearing it! That's the appearance of Mountaineers, the only people who could become and train wizards in antiquity :)! Best wishes! Keep the good work going! Let the wonderful noise of the sea always sounds in your ears! (a greeting of the water dragons' hunters - my Tale Of The Rock Pieces).

Hi Mr. Brennan,

I'm a devoted spanish fan of your GrailQuest adventure gamebooks. I hope they were reprinted in spanish, so they have had a lot of success here in the 80's.

This is my small tribute to this fantastic series:

Thank you for the kind words, Jolan, and for that magnificent tribute. I fear I don't speak a word of Spanish, but I was impressed nonetheless. Thank you so much,
